• —  How do you get to the top of my list? You set yourself apart from all the others!  Dr. Damon L. Stutes (certified by the National Abortion Federation) is a gynecologist, experienced microsurgeon and recognized abortion specialist with an admirable reputation among the community of top-notch abortion specialists.  His clinic, publishes the book, Surgical Abortion that is used as a reference by some of the very best abortion clinics and doctors.  He designed and built a large, yet private facility designed to deliver a world class standard of patient care, comfort and safety and trained a permanent office staff to deliver on all aspects of patient care and comfort.  Time Magazine and many anti-freedom activists call his office "Fort Abortion" referring to the impenetrable nature of the structure and the many privacy and safety features.  Dr. Stutes rather boldly claims to provide the latest and safest abortion procedures found today.   Everyone I have talked to agrees.  Of course, Dr. Stutes and the West End Women's Medical Group won't consider subjecting their patients to the abortion pill!

• — O.K., now I'm breaking my own rules.  Up from number 7 because I know a little more about Dr. Peter Bours than I did when he first made the list, Dr. Bours graduated from Stanford University and received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He is a board certified family physician and truly an abortion specialist.  While he runs multiple clinics (I know what I said about chains), it is safe to say that Dr. Bours and his wife (who has a masters degree in nursing and is a nurse practioner in women's health) have made their clinics successful by focusing on quality patient care.  Dr. Bours clinics have recently ceased providing the abortion pill due to the high risk of serious complications.

• —  If asked to name someone more deserving of recognition in the area of women's freedom than Dr. Hern, I don't think I could.  Dr. Hern was saving women's lives long before abortion was recognized as a Constitutional right.  If your circumstance in life leaves you in desperate need of an abortion, you need to thank people like Dr. Hern -- No! -- You need to thank Dr. Hern for having fought a very bitter fight with no small amount of personal sacrifice and peril so you could enjoy that right!  It is also lucky for women that this freedom fighter is also the recognized expert in late-term abortion technique.  Every abortion specialist I have talked with, including several who compete with Dr. Hern for late term abortions, has told me that Dr. Hern is the doctor to whom they would send their loved one in need of a late term abortion.  It would be pretty hard not to put him here!

• —  A strange feeling webpage and skewed fee structure don't hide the fact that this is the office of someone who fights for freedom of choice.  Another abortion specialist who has abandoned the abortion pill for all the right reasons.  Dr. Carhart's reputation for being outspoken on the Constitutional right we weakly cling to is equaled by a reputation for quality patient care and good surgical technique.  He was an easy choice for my Top Ten.


• —  A new effort on the part of Dr. Carhart focuses on helping people fund new abortion clinics. It has been difficult for some to get a loan for anything abortion related and apparently Dr. Carhardt is taking steps to right this wrong. It's an admirable step that has nothing to do with moving him up on my list.

• —  I am working on this one.  Dr. Hanson is in the Top Ten based on praises, mostly from her male colleagues.  That's only significant because her webpage emphasizes, "...a woman gynecologist..."  This tasteless tactic probably works among non-thinking women who believe a woman will be more caring, blah, blah, blah. But what if it causes her male counterparts to start suggesting that men are better surgeons?  It's about the same logic. It turns me off.  I would rather see a successful woman trade on her success and not cheap sexist tricks.  Whew!  Having said that, it is true that Dr. Hanson enjoys a reputation as a caring and competent surgeon who is seen as near the top in skill and ability.  I haven't verified it, but I understand that Dr. Hanson doesn't offer the abortion pill.

• —  You are going to wonder why he is here.  Yes, Dr. Boyd does medical abortions (the abortion pill) and says on his website, "Complication with non-surgical abortion is rare...."  Gulp!  Hasn't he referred to all the data, including that from the manufacturer and the National Abortion Federation!  And, he uses a sliding-scale fee schedule.  When you contact his office though, you are quoted the whole cost up front, just the way it is supposed to be done.  That's good, but the real reason Dr. Boyd made the list is patient care.  He promises to take a quality service approach to patient care and his reputation indicates that he does.  He also benefits from a great reputation among other abortion specialists as a good surgeon using the latest and safest procedures (except in the case of the abortion pill!)

• — Replacing the old #8 (now completely off my list), this clinic doesn't live up to all my expectations.   For example, when asking the cost of an abortion, you get a sliding scale starting price followed by a limited number of add-ons (if you ask).  Examples include a separate charge for an ultrasound and lab work.  Would Dr. Christensen conduct the abortion procedure without first viewing an ultrasound?  I hope not and the glowing reports of his surgical abilities and patient care that got him here would indicate that he doesn't.  His staff wouldn't let me talk to him when I called, but he made the list on overall reputation and, I believe the merits of a real abortion specialist.  Now, if the clinic staff would just quote the real cost of the procedure with anesthesia and all the things you really do need....
